Richard M. Kunnath, P.E., President
Rik Kunnath recently retired as the Executive Chairman of the Board for Pankow Management, Inc., the holding company for the various entities that constitute the Pankow group of companies. Rik joined Pankow in 1979. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Detroit, and is a registered Civil Engineer and licensed contractor and real estate broker in numerous states. As a frequent speaker to industry groups and academic institutions, his topics include trends affecting the design and construction industry, alternative delivery models and innovation in construction.
In 1993, Rik Kunnath was among a handful of practitioners that founded the Design-Build Institute of America in Washington, DC. He served as its National Chairman in 1995 and as President of the Design Build Education and Research Foundation and is the former President of the Foundation for Integrated Services.
Currently, Rik serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Charles Pankow Foundation, and is a member of Lambda Alpha International, the Honorary Society for the Advancement of Land Economics. He has also served on the Board of Directors of SPUR (San Francisco Planning & Urban Research Association), on the Advisory Council of the University of Detroit’s School of Engineering, and Board of Advisors of the Children’s Hospital of Oakland. Mr. Kunnath is a Certified Arbitrator for the Large and Complex Case Panel of the American Arbitration Association of Northern California.
Rik has received numerous awards and recognitions. He received ASCE’s 2018 Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research; CBIA’s 2015 Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award; and AIA’s President’s Citation. In 2013, Rik was elected to the National Academy of Construction. Also in 2013, Rik was named one of ENR’s Top 25 Newsmakers where he was recognized for his support of “building innovation one grant at a time.”
