RESEARCH GRANT AWARDS: Expanded Guides to Managing the Design Phase of Design-Build Projects

Since 2011, the Charles Pankow Foundation’s "Professional’s Guide to Managing the Design Phase of a Design-Build Project" has been a go-to resource for professionals looking to achieve greater success on design-build (DB) projects in the building sector. This resource formalized the role of a design-phase manager to lead the compressed design and construction cycle found on DB projects. Today, the use of DB extends far beyond buildings and the responsibility for managing the design phase is no longer consolidated into a single role. In addition, the industry is rapidly changing in ways that affect the design phase, including design-assist through specialty trades, BIM execution planning, offsite construction techniques, and more.

This project will bring together academics and industry experts to produce an expanded suite of design management publications, based on the Professional’s Guide, second edition. These publications will prepare owners, designers, and builders to be leaders of innovation on DB projects.
To advance these efforts, the Foundation is pleased to announce the award of three new research grants to:

  • University of Florida, Principal Investigator (PI) Bryan W. Franz, Ph.D. with co-PI Daniel Hall, Ph.D. of ETH Zürich
  • Iowa State University, PI Jennifer Shane, Ph.D.
  • University of New Mexico, PI Susan Bogus Halter, P.E., Ph.D.

Industry involvement is key to our success. Thank you to these industry leading companies and organizations who are co-funding these efforts:
