The Charles Pankow Foundation leads industry collaborations, funds research, and delivers solutions that help the design and construction industry be more efficient and cost competitive. The Foundation provides resources and leadership to advance innovation.

Our vision and mission statements form the basis of research topics selected by the Foundation and the means by which the research programs are executed.

“Catalyst” is used here to imply our intent to bring both leadership and resources to the process of advancing innovation.

Charles Pankow Foundation is incorporated as a nonprofit, public benefit, charitable foundation with 501(c)(3) status and operates independently of the Pankow Companies. The Foundation carries forward the spirit of Charlie Pankow’s legacy, vision, innovation, and leadership.



Richard M. Kunnath, P.E., President

Rik Kunnath recently retired as the Executive Chairman of the Board for Pankow Management, Inc., the holding company for the various entities that constitute the Pankow group of companies. Rik joined Pankow in 1979. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Detroit, and is a registered Civil Engineer and licensed contractor and real estate broker in numerous states.


Timothy P. Murphy, Esq., Secretary and Chief Financial Officer

Timothy Murphy is an 18-year Pankow company veteran and the former Chief Financial Officer of the Pankow Companies. Prior to joining Pankow, he worked in public accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the California State Bar. Mr. Murphy holds both a B.A. degree in accounting and a J.D. degree from Gonzaga University


Ron Klemencic, P.E., S.E., Hon. AIA

Ron Klemencic is Chairman and CEO of Magnusson Klemencic Associates, a major international structural and civil engineering firm headquartered in Seattle, Washington. Ron earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and his master’s degree in Structural Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He has served as a Charter Member of the Charles Pankow Foundation


Anne M. Ellis, P.E., FACI, F.ASCE, Executive Director

Anne Ellis’s career has focused on infusing innovation into projects, programs, and business strategies. In addition to her technical and design expertise, which focused on structural engineering and reinforced concrete, Anne has served in many prestigious roles in the industry: president of the American Concrete Institute, a Board member of the National Institute of Building Sciences and



The Charles Pankow Foundation was established in 2002 by Charles J. Pankow, founder of Pankow Builders and a pioneer in the construction industry. The Board of Directors elected Richard M. Kunnath as President in 2004. A nine-member National Advisory Council held its inaugural meeting in December 2005. The first two research grants were awarded in April 2006.

In 2012, the Board, Advisory Council, and staff undertook a thorough review of the Foundation’s activities and in 2013, the Board adopted new Mission and Vision Statements that reflect a more end-goal focused and strategically based research program.

The Board adopted a new 5-year strategy in 2017, called CPF2.0, to evolve from being a primary funder of innovation research to also being the acknowledged leader of cross-AEC innovation collaboration.
