Thick Foundation Element Blind Prediction Contest 2021

Participate in the prediction of the strength of a reinforced concrete deep beam intended to represent a slice through a thick foundation mat. Competition image above shows a photograph of the test specimen after removal of formwork but before testing.

The test specimen was constructed by staff of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley and a construction team from Level10 Construction as part of a research project funded by a grant award from the Charles Pankow Foundation. The objective of this research is to develop recommendations for the safe and efficient design of thick foundation mats using high-strength reinforcement.

This work is made possible thanks to the additional support of the ACI Foundation; Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute; Level 10 Construction; MKA Foundation; Cascade Steel Rolling Mills; and nVent Lenton. Industry Advisors for this research include Evan Bentz, Michael Collins, David Fields, Neil Hawkins, and Dominic Kelly. Principal Investigator: Jack Moehle.
