Ron Klemencic is Chairman and CEO of Magnusson Klemencic Associates, a major international structural and civil engineering firm headquartered in Seattle, Washington. Ron earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and his master’s degree in Structural Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He has served as a Charter Member of the Charles Pankow Foundation National Advisory Council since 2006 and has been instrumental in guiding CPF’s strategic and functional directions in the Foundation’s initial start-up period.
Ron has acquired a reputation in the building industry as an “idea guy,” based on his success in advancing innovative engineering solutions for large buildings and for his innate ability to “see the big picture.” His unique contributions can be seen in his many structural projects that are found in 22 states in the U.S. and in 21 other countries, with $5.2 billion of structures designed in the last 5 years alone.
Ron is a past 5-year Chairman of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, the only international organization that brings together all the disciplines involved in creating the global urban environment. He led the development of standards and criteria for naming the tallest buildings in the world; organized professional conferences on tall buildings in London, Seoul, New York among others, and represented the Council publicly on wide-ranging subjects relating to tall buildings and their effect on community life. Ron recently led the development of a new high-rise design methodology known as “Performance-Based Seismic Design” (PBSD), which provides buildings with increased safety, reliability, and flexibility at a reduced cost. PBSD represents the future of high-rise development and, at Ron’s advocacy, is rapidly being adopted throughout the United States.
Ron received the 2018 Engineering News-Record Award of Excellence, one of the highest honors in the AEC industry. He also received the 2017 Landis Epic Lectureship Endowed Lecturer, 2016 CTBUH Fazlur Khan Lifetime Achievement Medal, and 2016 ASCE Ernest E. Howard Award.

Rik Kunnath recently retired as the Executive Chairman of the Board for Pankow Management, Inc., the holding company for the various entities that constitute the Pankow group of companies. Rik joined Pankow in 1979. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Detroit, and is a registered Civil Engineer and licensed contractor and real estate broker in numerous states. As a frequent speaker to industry groups and academic institutions, his topics include trends affecting the design and construction industry, alternative delivery models and innovation in construction.
In 1993, Rik Kunnath was among a handful of practitioners that founded the Design-Build Institute of America in Washington, DC. He served as its National Chairman in 1995 and as President of the Design Build Education and Research Foundation and is the former President of the Foundation for Integrated Services.
Currently, Rik serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Charles Pankow Foundation, and is a member of Lambda Alpha International, the Honorary Society for the Advancement of Land Economics. He has also served on the Board of Directors of SPUR (San Francisco Planning & Urban Research Association), on the Advisory Council of the University of Detroit’s School of Engineering, and Board of Advisors of the Children’s Hospital of Oakland. Mr. Kunnath is a Certified Arbitrator for the Large and Complex Case Panel of the American Arbitration Association of Northern California.
Rik has received numerous awards and recognitions. He received ASCE’s 2018 Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research; CBIA’s 2015 Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award; and AIA’s President’s Citation. In 2013, Rik was elected to the National Academy of Construction. Also in 2013, Rik was named one of ENR’s Top 25 Newsmakers where he was recognized for his support of “building innovation one grant at a time.”
Mark J. Perniconi, P.E., Executive Director
As part of Mark Perniconi’s 30-year career in the construction and real estate development industries, he spent 13 years as a Vice President of the Pankow Companies managing the real estate development activities of the company. Mark worked very closely with Charles Pankow on matters related to company-owned real estate assets and development opportunities. Mark also held executive positions with the W.M. Lyles Company in Fresno, California, The C.E. John Company in Vancouver, Washington and Westfield in Roseville, California.
A native of suburban Chicago, Mark holds BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA from the Krannert Graduate School of Management at Purdue University. He’s a Registered Civil Engineer and Licensed Real Estate Broker in California and a member of ACI.
